On September 4th, 2026, the Collective Response Initiative York (CRIY) held their second annual recovery month art show. This year’s theme, “The Light Within Us,” was selected to highlight that hope, strength, and creativity are possible within every person, even within our darkest moments.

The Art Show exhibited art from individuals and family members who have been impacted by substance use. Many of the artists identified themselves as someone who is in recovery from substance use. The show had art from 15 different artists.
Over the course of the last 5 months, the action team has met regularly to discuss the planning and execution of the art show. From recruiting artists, to identifying opportunities to allow individuals to have access to art supplies, the action team worked diligently to allow for this show to come to fruition.
For the first time, the York Art Association partnered with CRIY to sponsor the “People’s Choice Award for Fine Art”. For the award, the York Art Association asked attendees to vote for their favorite piece of fine art, and the winner would be awarded $100.
Ballot Box for People’s Choice Award
The winner of the award was Joann Kelley, a York Artist who specializes in written and visual arts. Her piece “Kindreds” was inspired by her nieces, Stefanie and Jacki. Joann shared that Stefanie passed from a fentanyl overdose in 2018, and her sister Jacki is celebrating 7 years in recovery. The piece was created in Stefanie’s memory, and to honor Jacki’s achievement.
